The Mountains of Instead

A Creepy Treat for National Poetry Day

Today is National Poetry Day (UK).  Here, have a poem. Atmospheric, full of lurking menace and an awfully good ghost story, The Raven is pretty fabulous and who better to narrate it than King Creepy himself...  Incidentally, in keeping with this month's theme, anything by Edgar Allen Poe would be a winning gift for All Hallow's Read.

Pretty good, yes?  You can find out more about National Poetry Day here.  And because we like to inflict our (sometimes-questionable-but-not-this-time-honest) taste on you here in The Mountains of Instead we must insist that you also check out the following poems.  You won't be disappointed.

Fernhill - Dylan Thomas
Having a Coke with You - Frank O'Hara
Autumn Song - WH Auden (home of the real Mountains of Instead)
maggie and milly and molly and may - ee cummings
The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock - TS Elliot
Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening - Robert Frost
You are at the Bottom of My Mind - Iain Crighton Smith
He Wishes for the Clothes of Heaven - WB Yeats

.... we could go on.  Really.  For AGES.  But we won't, because poems are out there to be found by YOU, like tiny gems that you keep in your pockets for ever.  Share your favourites in the comments and remember to read a few today.  Or write a few.  Or just think about pretty words that sound nice together.  It all works.  Happy reading.
